Aberrations

Volume III

Aberrations

Aberrations is a collaboration between photographic artists Han Furnée and Steve Rood. This volume is a series of photographic images presented in a handmade booklet. The series has been created with two photographic practitioners who both commit to explore the possibilities of photography. It is part of a greater project that investigates an existing collection of objects as the creation of an interpretive portrait.

The photographic series Aberrations explores the act of perception as a performance. The work presents an exploration of perception as being a creative, reflexive dialogue. One that embraces deviations and distortion as being integral. These images resist representational urges, while still embracing the metaphorical characteristics of its elements. The works do not seek to disclose or denote anything in particular, but provide a site for those to occur. They explore the possibility of a performance of meaningless objects. The works do not veer to the fully abstract, leaving elements of recognition remaining for perception to take place. The narrative that does exist, is to provide a framework for the relationships of objects, their recording and the performance of their encounter.

The work’s process embraces a musical approach to creation. This series explores metaphors of the interplay of spontaneity and recital as a process of creative production. Unlike photography which often requires an explanation or story to provide its meaning, from music we mostly don’t require anything other than an emotive sensation. Applying this concept to photographic creation, these works seek to explore notions of the perception of the photographic image without being confined to literal meanings. Works have been created to be held within a loose operatic narrative, one with its own characters, conflicts and resolutions. The choice of objects and their placements and the relationships between them have undergone free form interplay akin to a performative recital.
